What to practice to achieve a good first tone:
Flute: 1. headjoint only: "toh" - open end, then closed end, then blow the syllable tooo" (to get the high pitch).
(with closed end, the pitch should sound like an "A" on the piano)
Clarinet/Bass Clarinet: 1. With mouthpiece and barrel, the pitch should sound like "E" on the piano. ("oh"....pull bottom lip over bottom teeth and point chin down....lay reed on bottom lip...close lips, and pull corners of mouth back slightly) Blow this pitch (E) for 8 counts, rest 8 counts - repeat this 5 times, keeping pitch steady and not puffing your cheeks.
Alto Saxophone: 1. With mouthpiece and neck, the pitch should sound like "Ab" on the piano. ("oh"....pull bottom lip over bottom teeth and point chin down....lay reed on bottom lip...close lips, and pull corners of mouth back slightly) Blow this pitch (Ab) for 8 counts, rest 8 counts - repeat this 5 times, keeping pitch steady and not puffing your cheeks.
Tenor Saxophone: 1. With mouthpiece and neck, the pitch should sound like "E" on the piano.
Trumpet/Trombone/Baritone: 1. with mouthpiece only: teeth finger tip apart; "oh"....."mmm"....buzz for 8 counts,
rest for 8 counts, repeat this 5 times. 2. With mouthpiece only, do "falls": Firm "mmm" and syllable "eee" TO loose "mmm" and syllable "aah". 3. Fall down, then go back up - Firm MMM/EEE TO loose MMM/AAH TO Firm MMM/EEE. This
will sound like an ambulance siren.
Percussion: 1. Grip - for all Mallets: The stick should be placed diagonally across the palm of the hand. Grip the stick
between the fleshy part of your thumb and the first joint of your index finger, approx. 1/3 the way up from the butt end of the stick to create the pivot point. Gently close the remaining fingers around the stick for support. Palms should
face the floor with the thumbs on the side and all knuckles visible. When playing, only move the stick as far back as wrist movement will allow without moving the forearm. For SD: "throw" the stick toward the surface and allow the stick to immediately rebound back to the playing position. For Bells: "throw" the mallet, from the wrist, toward the tone bar and quickly lift it back to the beginning position in one smooth continuous motion. The best tone is achieved when the mallet is immediately lifted off the tone bar. Keep your eyes on the music and use peripheral vision to locate the tone
bars .
Band Schedule:
5th Grade Band rehearses every MONDAY, TUESDAY, AND FRIDAY. At the beginning of each day, students or parents may drop the instrument off, putting it in their students' assigned slot, in the band room storage closet, entering thru the carline door. All horns must be taken home by 3:15 pm.
